Storage tanks are basically containers for preserving gases and liquids for a longer period of time before being transported for further processing.

Floating roof storage tanks

If you own a business-like petroleum producing and refining, bulk storage and transfer operations, petrochemical and chemical manufacturing, where you have to deal with gases or liquids on a daily basis, industrial storage tanks are the best option available for you.

In the oil and gas industry, the American Institute's API 650 standard outlines are the minimum requirements for the fabrication, design, erection, and inspection of welded storage tanks. Storage tanks are often cylindrical and are placed at a 90-degree angle from the ground.

Let's have a quick look at what are the two most common types of storage tanks:

Floating roof storage tanks

Floating roof storage tanks: From the very name you may understand that these tanks are designed with a roof that floats on top of the liquid. This floating roof moves up and down as the level of liquid changes (like filling or emptying) in the tank.

Cost-effectiveness, safety, and efficiency are the main reasons for which these types of storage tanks are highly popular throughout the world.

These floating roof storage tanks also help to minimize the amount of vapor between it and the liquid.

It is not just a large flat disc covering the outer area of the liquid but it has been designed in such a way to minimize the vapor loss.

There are mainly two types of floating roof storages available in the market:

Floating roof storage tanks

1. The pontoon roof: These are the most economical type of floating roofs in use in recent years. These are closed compartments which are fitted to the outer edge of a center under the roof.

It minimizes the evaporation of losses of stored products such as diesel, gasoline, petroleum etc. these types of tanks also protect the environment by not releasing toxic gases to the atmosphere.

2. Double-deck roof: As the name implies that these types of tanks have two decks of steel plates disconnected by chambers covering the entire surface area of the deck.

As these have double decks, the lower decks are not exposed to the sun rays, which help to reduce vapor loses.

Fixed roof storage tanks

Fixed roof storage tanks: A traditional and typical fixed roof storage tank consists of a cylindrical steel shell with a dome or cone-shaped roof that is attached to the tank shell.

A pressure vacuum valve or breather valve is installed which allows the tank to operate at a slight internal pressure or vacuum. Even these tanks are fitted with a ring of nozzles that spray foam over the surface of the tanks in the event of a fire.

Inert gas blankets are used to displace air that may create an explosive or flammable mixture with vapors in the tank.
